The Fibre Installation Technician course is designed to provide the communications cabling industry with personnel who have the specialist knowledge and skills to install, fault find, repair and test fibre optic and copper communications networks. The rollout of the National Broadband Plan has increased the demand for technicians to build the national high speed broadband infrastructure, the Metropolitan Area Networks and the fibre to premises connections. This work consists of laying overhead and underground high speed fibre optic cables. An inevitable consequence of the rollout of high speed broadband will be the need to install, retrofit and upgrade internal high speed networks in industrial, commercial and public premises. These installations consist of structured fibre optic and copper cabling systems. Technicians must be as equally adept at climbing and working on poles, towers and mobile elevated platforms as they are at installing underground services and structured cabling systems in buildings. The course is the ideal starting point for anyone who is interested in developing a career in this type of work.
- Induction – The planned outcomes and conditions attached to attendance on the course; good safety, health and hygiene practices; the basic principles involved in environmental issues; and the meaning of equal opportunities.
- Principles of Communications Cabling – Develop the knowledge and skills to implement safe working practices when installing fibre optic telecommunications cabling. Identify safe working practices in communication systems; describe the basic principles of SI units and symbols; describe the basic principles of communications systems; and describe the basic principles of data communications.
- Fibre Optic Cabling in an Internal Environment – Develop the knowledge and skills to install, splice, connect, terminate and test fibre optic cable in a data communications internal environment. Work safely with optical fibres in an internal environment; follow recommended installation procedures; prepare fibre optic cable for fibre connectorisation and splicing; splice together optical fibres, terminate fibre optic cables by fitting connectors; and test Fibre Optic links.
- Fibre Optic Cabling in an External Environment – Develop the knowledge and skills to install, splice, terminate and test fibre optic cables in an external environment. Work safely with optical fibres in an external environment; follow recommended installation procedures; prepare fibre optic cables for fibre splicing; joint fibre optic cables by splicing; terminate fibre optic cables by splicing on pre-terminated pigtails; and test fibre optic links.
- Copper Cabling in an Internal Environment – Develop the knowledge and skills to safely install copper communication cabling. Work safely with copper cabling in an internal environment; demonstrate an understanding of basic electrical theory and safety with reference to data communications cabling; install copper communication cabling, following recommended installation procedures in accordance with current application standards; terminate copper communication cabling; and test FTP, UTP and multicore copper links.
- Career Planning & Work Experience – Plan and achieve realistic work goals. Outline the factors which underpin and influence the labour market and affect local job opportunities; identify the basic rights and responsibilities of employees and employers; identify and explore personal strengths, talents, goals and values linked to employment opportunities; prepare and compose a letter of application, CV and application form; prepare for an interview; participate effectively in work experience with appropriate
The course duration is 24 weeks, including 5 weeks work practice. A number of training methods are used to deliver this course. These include instructions, presentations, demonstrations, supervised practice, simulated work environment, practical work place training, and giving and receiving feedback. Participants are required to actively participate in the learning process and to engage in course work outside of normal course hours. They must complete a number of written exercises and assignments throughout the course and keep up-to-date records of their progress. A number of methods are used to assess the participants’ progress and for certification purposes. These include assignments, multiple choice tests, learner portfolios, and skills demonstrations.
- Reached the statutory school leaving age.
- Minimum of Junior Cert or equivalent.

- Good hand/eye co-ordination, manual dexterity and spatial aptitude.

- Must have an appropriate level of fitness and physical ability to carry out duties as described.

- The selection process includes an interview, colour vision test, climbing assessment and medical check.
The National Broadband Plan sets out ambitious targets that all citizens should have access to 30Mb/s high speed broadband and 50% of households should have access to100Mb/s high speed broadband before 2020. This commitment ensures the continued growth in the demand for Fibre Installation Technicians.
