Marine Angling Guiding

Do you have a positive attitude, outgoing personality and strong sense of customer service together with a strong interest in marine angling? If so, this may be the course for you. The course offers participants the opportunity to develop the professional, technical, social and administrative skills needed to deliver a high quality marine angling guiding service to anglers visiting designated regions in Ireland.

Marine angling guides plan and implement fishing tours and escort groups of anglers on fishing trips to the best fishing locations around the coast of Ireland. They should be well versed in all areas of fishing, feel comfortable on the water and enjoy helping others with every aspect of the fishing experience. Communicating, planning and organising are important skills to possess and the greater your range of fishing skills the better your chances are of being hired as an inland angling guide.

On successful completion of the course you will be able to:
• Understand the structures and profiles of the tourism and hospitality sectors.
• Demonstrate a broad range of knowledge relating to the history and development of angling in Ireland.
• Deliver an informative, interesting and relevant angling experience incorporating a range of angling skills and techniques across a multitude of environments.
• Utilise digital media skills to enhance the tour experience, promote potential products and services, and exploit employment opportunities.
• Demonstrate skills in outdoor leadership, guiding and group management, integrating best safety and environmental practices across a range of angling experiences.
• Facilitate clients in developing and improving skills through the provision of rewarding angling experiences and evaluate the success of the angling product in relation to the customer experience.
• Implement best safety and environmental practice throughout the angling experience.

  • Induction – State the role of the Education and Training Board and the planned outcomes and conditions attached to the course. Individual learning techniques and styles will be identified. The application of good safety, health and welfare practices will be explored. The policies and procedures of the training location will be advised. The emergency evacuation procedures and the importance of equal opportunities will be examined.

 

  • First Aid Responder (FAR) –  Describe the role and responsibilities of the first aid responder, assess patients, deal with respiratory emergencies, act as a cardiac first responder using both CPR and AED, and deal with different types of injuries, altered levels of consciousness, musculoskeletal injuries, burns, scalds, chemicals, poisonings and electric shocks.

 

  • Customer Relations/Interpersonal Skills – Use a variety of communication and problem solving techniques to foster good customer relations and deal effectively with a range of customer situations. Employ personal presentation techniques for introductions, presentations and day-to-day dialogue with customers. Utilise effective time management techniques. Perform customer care administration tasks, e.g. tour reports, incident and accident reports, invoicing and other.

 

  • Irish Tour Guiding – Develop the knowledge and skills to carry out tour guiding activities within a range of different contexts. Explain the role and responsibilities of the tourist guide. Explain the structures of the tourism industry and the role of tourism in the Irish economy. Identify notable features of a range of regions and localities. Identify key features of accountable and sustainable tourism. Research information for use in clear, concise commentaries. Evaluate the main markets for Irish tourism. Evaluate all health and safety considerations when planning and conducting tours. Develop and demonstrate the skills to lead and manage tours. Demonstrate the ability to deliver effective and engaging commentaries. Demonstrate effective group management. Demonstrate appropriate communication, social, decision-making, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Develop digital media skills to enhance the tour experience, promote potential products and services, and exploit employment opportunities.

 

  • Angling and Safety – Describe key aspects of angling history, literature and tradition. Explain the effects of geology, topography and hydrology on water bodies; the signs, causes and forms of water pollution; the variety of aquatic ecological cycles in relation to food production, energy flow, water levels; and the interaction of invertebrates and plants in relation to fish species. Describe the procedures for ensuring access permissions to the angling locations, the causes of accidents in the angling environment and measures taken to minimise them, the statutory legislation in relation to crew and equipment requirements for basic vessel types, the key elements of fisheries legislation, and the role of government departments and other agencies.  Identify a range of popular marine and fresh water angling species. Demonstrate a range of angling, handling and preservation techniques in accordance with prevailing conditions, best practice and species.  Apply knowledge of fish and invertebrate biology when selecting angling methods and “Fishing Hot Spots”. Prepare a route card for an angling experience. Use appropriate tools for predicting water conditions and levels which are safe and conducive to the angling experience. Describe the purpose, use and maintenance of safety equipment and any policies that need to be in place. Design an angling experience incorporating the relevant statutory legislation which applies to the guide in their role as leader.  Evaluate the role and responsibilities of the outdoor leader. Develop an understanding of the need for quality review and reflective practice within the angling product and use this to tailor future angling experiences.

 

  • Marine Angling – Describe the development of marine angling in Ireland including the development of tackle and techniques. Describe the marine ecological cycle in terms of food production, energy flow, tides and currents. Describe the biology, life cycle, habitats and distribution of a range of common marine species. Outline threats to the habitat and survival of marine fish species; include mitigating legislative steps taken to protect these species. Describe the behaviour of marine fish species throughout the seasons. Demonstrate the types, uses and maintenance of a range of marine angling equipment. Demonstrate the preparatory requirements for a range of marine angling experiences. Demonstrate a range of marine fishing methods. Demonstrate appropriate use of tackle, baits and lures in a range of types of fishing and prevailing conditions. Evaluate and implement the necessary health and safety considerations raised in an angling experience making reference to statutory guidelines. Advise anglers on the different angling techniques, lines and terminal tackle, in relation to venue and target species. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the influence of tides and marine forecasting in relation to the angling experience. Appraise the use of electronic fishing aids in identifying suitable fishing location and species. Demonstrate the correct procedures after landing of catch including how this may vary between season and species. Demonstrate an understanding of the need for quality review and reflective practice within the angling product and use this to tailor future angling experiences.

 

  • Business Start-Up Overview – Understand the processes involved in starting up, operating and evaluating a business. Identify appropriate agencies and sources of information to assist in developing a business.  Establish the relevant strategies and research techniques used when developing an enterprise.  Examine the statutory legal requirements when running a business.  Outline the main elements of a Business Plan.

 

  • Digital Marketing Tour Guiding – Utilise digital marketing to promote a tour guiding business.  Describe how search engines work and identify how to optimise a tour guide website for marketing purposes.  Set up a Google account and run a Google ad campaign. Shoot and edit marketing videos using a smartphone. Use Facebook ads and a twitter account to promote and market a tour guide business.

 

  • Career planning and job seeking skills – Plan and achieve realistic employment goals.

 

  • Work Practice – Transfer, practice and further develop the knowledge and skills needed to be a competent tour guide in a work environment allied to the occupation.

This is a full-time course of 14 weeks duration. A number of training methods are used to enable the participants perfect the standard of knowledge and skills required of tour guides.  These include instructions, presentations, demonstrations, one-to-one tuition, supervised practice, practical work training, discussion groups and role plays.  Participants are required to actively participate in the learning process.  They must complete a number of practical and written assignments throughout the course.  A number of methods are used to assess the participants’ progress and for certification purposes.  These include assignments, theory exams, practical assessments, skills demonstrations and a portfolio of work.

  • Reached the statutory school leaving age.
  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification and/or relevant life and work experience.
  • Good communication skills including good verbal and written English language skills.
  • Good numeracy skills.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, outgoing and friendly.
  • Able to integrate and relate to a variety of individuals and groups.
  • A range of angling skills are desirable.
  • A full class B driving licence is desirable.
  • Basic computer skills are an integral part of completing this course.

Participants who successfully complete this course will seek positions as inland angling guides working on a freelance basis or with one the companies specialising in guided inland fishing tours.
